Matetas Dramatic Penalty In Added Time Denies Leicester Victory At Palace

Mateta's dramatic penalty in added time denies Leicester victory at Palace

Eagles earn deserved point with 1-1 draw

Wilfried Zaha had given Palace the lead on the stroke of half-time, but James Maddison equalised 20 minutes from time

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a dramatic penalty in the sixth minute of added time to earn Crystal Palace a 1-1 draw with Leicester City at Selhurst Park. Wilfried Zaha had given Palace the lead on the stroke of half-time, but James Maddison equalised 20 minutes from time. Leicester looked set to hold on for a first away win of the season, but Mateta was brought down by Daniel Amartey in the box deep into stoppage time. Michael Olise passed up the chance to take the penalty, with Mateta instead sending Danny Ward the wrong way to snatch a point for Palace. The result leaves Leicester 19th in the Premier League table, while Palace move up to 12th.

Reaction from the Palace boss Patrick Vieira

"I'm really pleased with the character and the spirit of the team," Vieira said. "We showed great character to come back from 1-0 down. We created chances, we were unlucky not to score more goals, but overall I'm really happy with the point. "We had a lot of chances, we played well, we created chances, and we deserved to win the game. But we didn't take our chances and in the end, we paid for it."

Reaction from the Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers

"It's a tough one to take," Rodgers said. "We were the better team for large parts of the game, but we didn't take our chances. We had a few good chances in the first half, but we didn't take them. And then in the second half, we had a great chance to go 2-0 up, but we didn't take it. "We're disappointed with the result, but we can take some positives from the performance. We played well for large parts of the game, and we created some good chances. We just need to be more clinical in front of goal."
